When teeth are broken down too far below the gum, a surgical procedure need to be performed to extract the roots. Surgical extractions involve sectioning of the roots and/or raising a flap (cutting and reflect the gum) and/or remove bone to expose sound tooth structure for removal. Often, sutures are placed to promote healing after the tooth is surgically removed.
