Sealants are normally considered a preventive method to protect the top portion of the tooth from getting decay (cavity). White filling material is applied on the pits and fissures of the tooth to seal them off. Sealants are only indicated when decay is not present. When decay has developed, a filling must be done to treat the diseased tooth structure.
