Amalgam fillings, or silver fillings, are more than just unsightly restorations. They contain mercury, a liquid metal mixed with other alloys during the preparation. Fractured amalgam restorations may release some trace mercury into your oral cavity. The mercury detrimental effects are still up for the debate. The amalgam restorations can be replaced with either composite (white, mercury-free) fillings or porcelain crowns.
